Authsignal introduces biometric verification for digital wallet credentials

Businesses have a new way to accept and verify digital identity credentials presented from digital wallets with the launch of Authsignal’s Digital Credential Verification software.

The capability supports biometric holder verification of mobile driver’s licenses and other credentials using the mdoc format and stored in Apple Wallet, Google Wallet and other standards-based wallets from Authsignal’s drop-in authentication and digital identity orchestration platform.

iProov, an Authsignal partner since 2023, provides the biometric matching and liveness detection for the new capability.

There are now more than 20 states across the U.S. with active mDL programs, and Authsignal notes in its announcement that more are expected to launch this year.

The adoption of age verification legislation by roughly half of U.S. states also presents a tail-wind for privacy-preserving credential verification, and businesses around the world will need a way to accept the digital identity credentials all EU member states are issuing under eIDAS 2.0.

"A digital credential is only as trustworthy as the person presenting it,” says Andrew Bud, founder and CEO of iProov. “As organizations increasingly rely on digital credentials to make identity verification more secure and convenient, they also need confidence that every credential is being presented by its legitimate holder. Our partnership with Authsignal brings government-grade biometric assurance into the digital credential verification flow, ensuring businesses and their customers can trust the process from end to end.”

"New technology only succeeds when it meets customers where they are. We proved that with passkeys, and we’re applying the same principle to digital credentials: drop-in integration, the right moment in the journey, and a user experience that never gets in the way,” says Authsignal Founder and Director of Product Justin Soong. “With mobile driver’s licenses rolling out across the U.S. and age verification legislation accelerating state by state, businesses need a way to accept these credentials without a major integration project. Our Digital Credential Verification suite is built on that principle: reducing the integration complexity and replacing it with the flexible drop-in patterns our customers expect.”
